Society places a lot of exceptions on women, especially Black women. We’re expected to look a certain, dress a certain, behave a certain way, express our feelings in a certain way and generally exist in a way that is pleasing and tolerable to others.

But what about what we want to be for ourselves?

At frances marie, we're all about celebrating and supporting those who live free from expectations and always stay true to themselves.

The spirit of frances marie was birthed in loving memory of my late grandma who was the most confident woman I’ve ever known. In 1950, at the age of 14, she got pregnant with my mom and was forced to drop out of high school. Without the promise of a diploma, my grandma had 2 choices: marry my grandfather or raise my mom alone. She chose the latter.

The truth was she wasn’t in love with my grandfather and frankly didn’t want to marry him. So, she didn’t. And that decision turned her into a young, Black, formally uneducated single mother. But she refused to follow the societal expectation that forced woman into marriage when they became pregnant. That just wasn’t who she was.

She was, however, a woman who didn’t let others dictate how she lived her life.

Our perfume brand experience exists to make you feel confident being exactly who you are, which is inspired by Frances’ courage to free herself from society’s expectations and live life on her own terms, by her own rules.

And it’s her confident and self-assured spirit that motivates me to help others free themselves from expectations and boldly do what they want to be who they are.

I hope frances marie gives you an extra dose of courage to continue being yourself, even when it’s hard.
